Social Harmony, Cultural Heritage, Economic and Educational Progress

🤝 1. Social Harmony and Progress

🏛️ Evolution of the Caste System and Paradigm Shift

A rigid caste system and feudal structure once existed in this region. However, through socio-cultural movements and political uprisings, the caste system was dismantled, transforming the Panchayat into an exemplary community where people of all castes and religions live together in unity.

🚀 Factors Driving Progress

Post-independence social transformations, assistance from Christian missionaries, and education enabled backward communities to make significant strides in acquiring education, adopting better clothing, and moving about freely.

📌 Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe Population: 19.78% of the total population.
🕌 2. Cultural and Religious Identity

🕊️ Communal Harmony

The Hindu, Christian, and Muslim places of worship and their associated festivals in the Pozhiyoor region attract thousands of people irrespective of caste or religion, reflecting deep-rooted communal harmony.

🛕 Devi Temple

The Thookam Festival at the Kulathoor Phanamukham Devi Temple is one of the ancient and renowned cultural festivals in Kerala.

  • Uchakkada R.C. Church
  • Parithiyoor St. Mary Magdalene Church
  • Kollamkodu St. Matthew's Church

🕌 Muslim Places of Worship

Prominent Muslim mosques are located in Charottukonam and Pozhiyoor.

🌾 3. Traditional Occupations and the Economy

🌴 Livelihoods and Traditional Occupations

The primary sources of income in the Panchayat are agriculture and fishing. Hundreds of people once depended on traditional occupations like toddy tapping, palm-leaf weaving, lime burning (shell baking), and coir making. However, due to socio-economic shifts, these traditional crafts are gradually fading away.

🐟 Transformations in the Fishing Sector

One-third of the population relies on fishing for their livelihood. Although the emergence of illicit liquor brewing as a cottage industry once severely impacted the region, awareness programs in 1992 completely eradicated illicit brewing, enabling the fishing community to actively return to their primary trade.

🎓 4. Education, Health, and Traditional Medicine

📚 Educational Advancement

Compared to earlier times, the region has achieved significant progress in literacy, with an increasing number of residents pursuing higher education and securing well-paying jobs.

🌿 Traditional Healing Systems

Traditional medical practices, such as therapeutic massages (Thirumal), Marma therapy, Siddha, and toxicology treatments (Visha Vaidyam), were actively practiced in this region.
